HCC Lifelong Learning Courses slated to begin early November

Highland Community College Lifelong Learning has a few courses left for the fall semester. Courses starting after Nov. 1 are Spanish Cuisine; Wire Wrapped Pendant; Introduction to Coding/Programming; Italian Cuisine and Cajun Cuisine. Below are the course descriptions and further information.

Spanish Cuisine

Location: St. John's United Church of Christ, Freeport

Registration Deadline: Nov. 6; Class Date: Nov. 13; Class Time: 5 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $45

Instructor: Michael Staver

Spain has a very diverse cuisine which changes dramatically from North to South. The Basque Region, northern Spain, encompasses both Spanish and French cuisines to the southern region of Spain, Andalusia. Spain makes 44 percent of the world's olive oil and grows almost 75 percent of the world's saffron. Dishes featured will be from the Basque region and from the southern region. Please bring containers to take food home in.

Wire Wrapped Pendant

Location: HCC/H117

Registration Deadline: Nov. 8; Class Date: Nov. 15; Class Time: 6 to 9 p.m.; Fee: $25

Instructor: Art Dawson

In this class you will learn how to make a wire-wrapped pendant, ready to hang on your favorite necklace.  A few basic styles will be taught, along with various techniques to add variation and style.  No heat or power tools needed - just hand tools and wire. Ready-to-wrap pendants will be available to select the night of the class, you can bring your own from home, or you can visit instructor Art Dawson's booth at the Northwest Illinois Rock Club's 2017 Jewelry, Gem, Fossil and Mineral Show on November 11-12 at Highland Community College and purchase a pendant to wrap.  Wire will be provided.  Please bring your own hand tools: smooth-faced round-nose pliers, smooth-faced flat-nose pliers and side cutters. A few tools will be available for your use. Students can expect to complete one pendant in class and learn the skills to create limitless pendants at home.

Introduction to Coding/Programming

Location: HCC/T-162

Registration Deadline: Nov. 9; Class Date: Nov. 16; Class Time: 6 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $25

Instructor: Jeremy Monigold

This course will introduce students to algorithm design (coding) and programming by explaining the importance of coding and programming skills in most industries around the world, developing an understanding of Input, Output, Arithmetic, Conditional Execution and Repetition, and assembling/writing a working program.

Italian Cuisine

Location: St. John's United Church of Christ, Freeport

Registration Deadline: Nov. 27; Class Date: Dec. 4; Class Time: 5 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $45

Instructor: Michael Staver

Italian food is a celebration of produce and protein is a secondary thought. Recipes will be different from the Spring 2017 class.  Please bring containers to take food home in.

Cajun Cuisine

Location: St. John's United Church of Christ, Freeport

Registration Deadline: Dec. 4; Class Date: Dec. 11; Class Time: 5 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $45

Instructor: Michael Staver

Gumbo and jambalaya are two examples of classic Cajun cooking. Cajun cuisine is a melting pot of cultures including Chinese, Indian, Native American, Italian, French, and African foods. Cajun foods are hearty fare developed to feed large numbers of people with a small amount of money and live off the land.  Rice is featured in many dishes because much of the terrain is either bayou or swamp, perfect rice growing conditions.  Please bring containers to take food home in.
