RSVP Recognizes Volunteers at Annual Recognition Awards Luncheon

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) recognized volunteers for their service to the community at a luncheon held on December 12tth at St. Thomas Church. RSVP volunteers participate in a wide variety of service including making quilts for children and spending time reading books in Head Start classrooms. Through the RSVP program over 87,522 hours of service have been given to northwest Illinois communities.

Awards were given for years of service at the gold, silver and bronze levels. Nine Lifetime Achievement awards were given to volunteers who have contributed 4,000 hours of service to our community. The Presidents Council on Service and Civic Participation created this award program to thank and honor Americans who engage in volunteer service.

For over 20 years Mike Shore, director of the RSVP program at Highland Community College, has prepared the meal for the RSVP holiday recognition luncheon with the assistance of his wife Mary Kate Shore, his children, HCC RSVP Volunteer Services Coordinator Cindi Mielke and volunteers. This is no small feat, as there were nearly 250 volunteers in attendance at this years luncheon. There is no cost to attend; instead it is a thank you to the volunteers for their service.

Catherine Sorn, one of the Lifetime Achievement award winners, was the first person Mike met when he came to the program over 20 years ago. She has become extended family to he and his children. Sharon Simler, another Lifetime Achievement award recipient, noted that she became involved with RSVP funny pictures thanks to her friend from church, Betty Wessel.

Joe Kanosky, president of Highland Community College and Rose Ferguson, associate vice president of human resources were on hand to personally hand out and congratulate all award recipients.

Another highlight of the event was raffling off of quilts made by the volunteers. The winners were Alice Shilling, Sharon Byer, Ruth Bloom, Madeline Hatlak, Vivian Moss and Peggy Campbell.
