'Ode to Joy' event to include HCC ensembles and many special guests

FREEPORT�The Highland Community College Music Department will present a special performance of the choral finale to Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, "Ode to Joy," at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, 2012, in the Freeport Masonic Temple Auditorium. Tickets for this event will go on sale Monday, March 12.

The Highland Chorale and Chamber Singers, Festival Chorus and orchestra will accompany former HCC music students Megan Besley and Nik Wenzel as well as featured soloists Katherine Calcamuggio and Scott Chachula.

The HCC Children's Chior directed by Diane Dietmeier will also perform.

Megan Besley

Soprano Megan Besley is a graduate of the young artist programs of Florida Grand Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, and the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, where she performed the operatic roles of Edith in "Pirates of Penzance" and newspaper seller in "Death in Venice" (Glimmerglass Opera), Frasquita in "Carmen" and Page in "Rigoletto" (Florida Grand Opera), and Georgiana in "Miss Havisham's Fire (The Opera Theatre of Saint Louis)."

Katherine Calcamuggio

Katherine Calcamuggio is an award-winning mezzo-soprano whose talent distinguishes her as one of the most promising young vocalists on the opera scene today. In the past three seasons, Calcamuggio has been featured in important role and company debuts across the United States, eliciting kudos for her "soaring, rich voice" ("The Miami Herald"), her "polished musical and dramatic characterizations" ("Kurt Weill Newsletter") and her "fine coloratura technique" ("Philadelphia Inquirer").

Scott Chachula

A veteran performer in the Chicago suburbs and state line area, Scott Chachula has been entertaining Rockford audiences for over 20 years appearing on numerous occasions as a guest soloist with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, the Bach Chamber Choir, the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, the Elgin Opera and Fresco Opera. His musical theater, credits include The Clock Tower Dinner Theater, The Lincolnshire Marriot Theater, New American Theater, Starlight and Studio Theaters at Rock Valley College and the Rockford Dance Company.

Nik Wenzel

A rising star in the world of classical voice, up-and-coming bass Nikolas Wenzel has garnered many accolades in his young career. Having twice been honored as a Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Mr. Wenzel is a winner of several awards in other regional vocal competitions, as well as having been featured in master classes with prominent artists Mark Delavan and Ren�e Fleming. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $6 for students.
