Highland to host Black History Month celebration

FREEPORT In recognition of Black History Month, Highland Community College and the HCC Task Force will sponsor a free and open public celebration beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 24, in the Student/Conference Center, H201.

This years event will feature a keynote address from Freeport High School Principal Dr. Patrick Hardy, further building on the inspirational themes he delivered during last years event. The evening will include musical selections from the HCC Royal Scots and the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church Men's Choir with a reception and refreshments to follow the program.

Prior to his arrival in Freeport, Dr. Hardy worked as a teacher in the Boston Public School District and as an assistant principal, principal and chief academic officer for the Rockford Public School District.

Dr. Hardy has presented on topics such as leadership, school improvement, strategic planning, among others. He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and leads the local chapter of its auxiliary group, the Rockford Sigma Beta Club, which provides mentoring to young men.

Hardy is also the recipient of the "Those Who Excel" award for outstanding school administrators and the "Distinguished Citizen Award" given by the Black Hawk Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
