Highland Community College celebrates 49th annual commencement
5/7/2012

FREEPORTó The northwest Illinois community and friends of Highland Community College are invited to join our 2012 graduates and their families as we celebrate the 49th Annual Commencement Ceremony to be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2012.

The ceremony will be held outdoors on the beautiful HCC campus in Freeport, IL. Commencement will take place in the courtyard between the Marvin-Burt Liberal Arts Center and Natural Science and Health Center. Guest parking will be located in parking lot D on the south side of campus outside of the Natural Science and Health Center.

The college is expecting the largest number of participating graduates ever, so seating will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Larry F. Kahl Gymnasium located in the YMCA Sports Center on Highland's Freeport campus. Due to the large number of graduates, tickets will be required to attend the ceremony if held in the Sports Center.

The greeting to the class of 2012 will be given by alumnus Tim Connors, director of Speech and Theatre at Freeport High School and part-time instructor at HCC. Connors is not only an active educator and resident of Freeport, but also portrays Stephen Douglas for historical interpretations and blogs for the local daily newspaper.

Dr. Alvin Goldfarb, President Emeritus of Western Illinois University

This year's commencement address will be given by Dr. Alvin Goldfarb, President Emeritus of Western Illinois University, who served at WIU from 2002 to 2011. The recently retired Goldfarb has received numerous accolades and awards for the progress shown at WIU during his tenure, such as the addition of facilities and programs at the Quad Cities Riverfront Campus.

Goldfarb has served as co-chair of Illinois Campus Compact, chair of the Mid-Continent Conference Presidents Council, and as a member of the Executive Board for The Renaissance Group. He has also been recognized for his work as a theater professor, furthering the arts at WIU with his involvement in the Illinois Alliance for Arts Education, Illinois Arts Council, the Illinois Theatre Association, and the American College Theatre Festival. Goldfarb has co-authored two theatre textbooks and co-edited two books, as well as being named a finalist for the 1999 National Jewish Book Award.
