Highland to hold special presidential election class at HCC West

ELIZABETHHighland Community College will be offering a special Community Education class entitled Choosing America's President, 1789-2012, at HCC West in Elizabeth.

The course will survey how presidents have been elected throughout U.S. history, with special emphasis on the 2012 presidential election. Topics will include choosing the president in times of crisis, realignment or turning-point elections, and how the laws, traditions, and mechanics of presidential elections and campaign financing have changed over time. The class will also explore the issues, candidate characteristics, image-making, and strategies which seem to be the most successful in electing a president.

The course will be held on Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. from September 10 through October 1 at HCC West, 300 N. Galena Ave. An optional meeting will take place on Monday, November 12, after the election, to discuss the results of this year's contest.

Tuition for the course is $100 payable at the first class meeting. For more information, contact Thompson Brandt, dean of humanities and social sciences, at 815.599.3450.
