HCC Trustees Grant Abatement for Heritage Woods Supportive Living Facility

Highland Community College Trustees approved a resolution allowing the tax abatement for the Heritage Woods Supportive Living Facility of Freeport during their regular board meeting on June 16, 2009. The measure grants a full abatement of taxes on the building and improvements for four years and gradual reduction of the abatement in the fifth and sixth year. "While the board considers each request for abatement on an individual basis, its philosophy is to look favorably on abatements that will help bring about significant economic benefit to the District," said HCC President Dr. Joe Kanosky. "It is the Trustee's belief that this project and resulting facility will benefit the local economy, as well as provide possible avenues for cooperation with our health science programs in the future."

In personnel related items, Trustees approved the appointment of Joe Grove as full-time economics instructor. Grove as he has been teaching economics courses on a part-time basis at HCC for the last three years. He has also held part-time teaching positions at Kishwaukee and Sauk Valley and holds an MBA from the University of Iowa and a Master�s of Education from Kaplan University. He has also completed a Master�s of Online Teaching certificate from the University of Illinois. funny cartoon pictures

The Board also approved the appointment of Karla Guiffre as temporary full-time Biology instructor for the 2009-2010 academic year. While obtaining her Master�s in Teaching of Biological and General Sciences at the university of Illinois, she served as an assistant coordinator of a project that organized undergraduate students in educational outreach programs implementing science lessons into classrooms and afterschool programs. funny pictures

In other business, Trustees:

- Approved the reorganization of the enrollment services unit consisting of Admissions and Records, Communication Center, Student Activities, Advising and Career Services.

- Approved the annual report of course and curriculum changes made by the Curriculum and Instruction Committee. funny images

- Updated the agreement with the Career and Technical Education Consortium (CareerTEC).

- Renewed the contract with the Stephenson County Sheriff�s Department to provide security services for the next three fiscal years.

- Renewed the lease agreement with the University of Illinois Extension for occupancy of space in the Community Services Center. funny photos

- Accepted a low bid from Mechanical, Inc. of Freeport for the installation of a modular boiler system in the Student Conference Center.

- Established FY�10 monthly rates for employee health insurance under the college�s self-insured health plan.

- Heard a monitoring report on the success of the college�s transfer students.
