Trustees Approve New Online QuickBooks Certificate
During the December board meeting at Highland Community College, Trustees approved a new QuickBooks Professional Certificate program, which will be taught entirely online. This new program will provide students with the technical skills needed to work as an accounting professional in an automated business environment that utilizes QuickBooks Professional accounting software. Students completing the program will also have a strong foundation in accounting procedures. QuickBooks is presently the most popular of the small-business accounting packages, and in-depth knowledge of the program is valuable in the marketplace.
Graduates will be ready for career advancement or entry level positions in accounting for non-profit and for-profit organizations and for self-employment as accounting professionals. Labor market information from the Illinois Department of Employment Services and the US Department of Labor predicts higher than average growth rates for related occupations in our local area, as well as at the state and national level.
Accounting Instructor Craig Pence earned the Master Online Teacher designation by completing a comprehensive program through the University of Illinois that provides in-depth knowledge of online course design and instruction. Instructor Pence created the online QuickBooks program and currently teaches five courses online.
The College provides free student workshops to aid students in preparing for online coursework including the workshop Become a Blackboard or Moodle User which will be offered on January 9th at 10:30 a.m. and on January 10th at 5:00 p.m. Blackboard and Moodle are web-based programs that many Highland instructors use to administer quizzes, provide discussion boards and to make course information available on the Internet. Call (815) 599-3403 to sign up for one of the January workshops.
