HCC SOVA art club attends International Day of Peace

Student Organization Visual Arts (SOVA) is the art club at Highland Community College. This is the first full year as a club, having been accepted by the College and Student Senate last spring. While the art club is beginning to make their presence known on campus, many took their awareness for the arts to the 12th annual International Day of Peace held Sept. 19 in Rockford.

Bob Apolloni, instructor at HCC and advisor for the club, said attending the event at the Keeling-Puri Peace Plaza was built around a book called "Jubilee," written by Dorothy Paige-Turner. Paige-Turner spoke to about 1,000 third, fourth and fifth grade students from Rockford. SOVA students played the peace drums during the presentation.

"That part of the ceremony was about bringing peace alive, and this is when our students played the drums, which are drums we built and decorated in our art classes," Apolloni said. "We specifically made the drums to take to this event. All clubs on campus are to reach out and work with other groups, and I thought this was a perfect way for our club to fit into doing something important."

SOVA took eight drums to event. Half were decorated and the other half were left for student decorating participation.

"It was a cool event," Apolloni said.
