Celebrate Black History Month at HCC

Start now on your submission to the poster contest!  $100 First Place and $50 Honorable Mention prizes

Posters must be no larger than 18" X 24" in size. Two categories for entries include African American Leaders in History and Modern Culture. Entries in both categories must help educate the audience. Original art including photographs, graphic design, text design, painting, drawing, or other interpretations that educate the audience may be used. Submissions should be delivered to Liz Gerber, in H-109 by noon on February 16. Submissions will be judged and displayed on campus.

Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 2:30 p.m. - Guest speaker Jeanne Schultz Angel in the Clarence Mitchell Library

Learn about the role the State of Illinois played during the anti-slavery movement in the mid-nineteenth century.


Wednesday, February 11 - Week 2 Film Festival

Higher Learning (cinematic film) in the Building H Student Lounge - Discussion to follow in Cafe - Film begins at 3:00 p.m. 


Thursday, February 12 - "Selma," Free private viewing for HCC at Lindo

Movie will begin at 12:30 p.m. - Discussion to follow at the Lindo - No classes this day in observance of Lincoln's Birthday -  Bring money for concessions (doors open at noon)  

February 16 - Poster Contest Submissions Due - Turn posters in by noon - H109

Wednesday, February 18 - Week 3 Film Festival

America Beyond the Color Lines (documentary) in the lobby of building M -- Discussion to follow in M-121  Film begins at 3:00 p.m.

Wednesday, February 25 - Week 4 Film Festival

"Crash" (Cinematic Film) in the Building H Student Lounge Discussion to follow in the Cafe - Film begins at 3:00 p.m.

Friday, February 27, 2015 at 7 p.m. - Carl and Dianna Cole with Cole and Company "Celebrating Motown" Student/Conference Center - Free event. The show will be a journey through the history of Motown. There will also a performance by the HCC Royal Scots, under the direction of Allen Redford. The program is sponsored by Highland Community College and Highland Community College Global Task Force.
