Highland Summerset Theatre auditions to be held March 28 and April 11

Highland Community College's 42nd season of Summerset Theatre will be auditioning for "Mary Poppins" (adults age 18 and older) from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 28 and for youth (ages 9-17) from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 11 at the Fine Arts Theatre in the Ferguson Fine Arts Center.

The director is seeking talented singers, dancers and musicians. There are roles for men and women, and youth. Highland Community College Theatre Department is actively seeking a multi-cultural cast and utilizes non-traditional casting in their productions.

The musical is based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney film, with original music by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman and book by Julian Fellowes. New songs and additional music and lyrics are by Gorge Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The story introduces the audience to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Marry Poppins arrives as the new nanny and teaches the family how to value each other again.

Performances for "Mary Poppins" will be held July 9-18.

Roles needed for "Mary Poppins":


Mary Poppins - (Female, 20-35) A nanny, with dazzling personality full of hope, and always means exactly what she says. British accent. Must dance well and be OK with heights and stage flying. (Mezzo with strong top)

Bert - (Male, 30-40) Manly, but warm. Has a variety of occupations and is a friend to Mary Poppins and the children. Cockney accent. Excellent tap dancer. Must be OK with heights and stage lying. (Baritone)

George Banks - (Male, 40's, plus) Father of Jane and Michael. A good provider, but forgets how to be a good father. (Baritone)

Winifred Banks - (Female, 30's, plus) A former actress. Loving, but distracted mother of Jane and Michael. (Mezzo)

Mrs. Brill - (Female, 50, plus) A housekeeper and cook. Intimidating exterior, but warmth and understanding underneath. Barks rather than speaks. (Alto)

Robertson Ay - (Male, early 20's) House boy of Banks family. Lazy and clumsy, but good-hearted. (Tenor)

Queen Victoria/Miss Smythe/Miss Andrew - (Female, 40's plus) Miss Andrew is a former nanny, who is overbearing and bullying with a trumpeting voice. (Soprano, with an Alto belt)

Bird Woman - (Female, 50, plus) Sits in front of the cathedral every day selling bags of crumbs to feed pigeons. (Alto)

Admiral Boom/Chairman - (Male, 50 plus) This is Banks' friendly neighbor and retired naval officer. Also plays Banks' Chairman. (Baritone)


Jane Banks - (Female, 10-14) Pretty and exuberant girl, occasionally inclined to snobbery. Must sing and dance well. (Soprano)

Michael Banks - (Male, 9-13) Younger brother to Jane, who is cute and cheeky. He adores his father and tries to be like him. Must sing and have basic dance. (Soprano, unchanged voice)

Youth/Teen Ensemble - (About 4-6 members) This ensemble will be part of some group numbers.

Katie Nanna - (Female, mid-20's) The last nanny for the Bank family before Mary Poppins


Miss Lark - (Female, 30-50)  A neighbor, snobby and treats the dog like a child. (Mezzo)

Park Keeper - (Male, 20, plus) Stickler for the rules and regulations. (Tenor)

Neleus - (Male, 20, plus) A Statue in the park, lost his father, Poseidon. Strong dancer with ballet. (Tenor)

Von Hussler - (Male, 40, plus) An ambitious man at the bank with a money-making scheme.

Northbrook - (Male) Middle-class man at the bank looking for an investment.

Mrs. Corry - (Female) Mysterious and very old and runs a magic sweet shop (Soprano)

Valentine - (Male) A doll come to life. A strong dancer.
