Pearl City Elevator announces donation to support HCC Ag's Soil Science Lab
12/16/2015

Pearl City Elevator (PCE) recently made a donation of $11,800 to the Highland Community College Agriculture Department, through the HCC Foundation, for the purchase of much-needed equipment for HCC's soil science laboratory. The gift was announced on December 15 in a check presentation ceremony on campus.

Pennie Groezinger, Human Resources Manager for Pearl City Elevator, remarked, "We are delighted to be part of the bright future that lies ahead for HCC Ag. This donation is a symbol of our confidence in the revitalized Ag program at Highland and our investment in a specific aspect of the program."

Justin Ebert, HCC Ag Program instructor, was on hand with officers of the student Ag Club the day the gift was announced.  "Having updated equipment in our soil science lab means that our agriculture students will have the best preparation possible in their Soil Science course at HCC," he stated. "The students can then utilize this learning in the field right away, or to continue with confidence their soil science studies when they transfer to a four-year institution."

The funds will be used to purchase a soil scanner, lab bench oven, soil grinder, muffle furnace, and several other items needed to enhance student learning in the program. Pearl City Elevator representatives are looking forward to engaging with the program and seeing the equipment "in action" once it is in place in the Soils Lab.

Pearl City Elevator, founded in 1918, is a full-service cooperative serving northwest Illinois and southern Wisconsin. PCE worked with Land O'Lakes Foundation to secure matching funds for this gift. Both organizations, Pennie stated, "believe in the future of agriculture and the importance of agriculture education."

On hand for Pearl City Elevator's recent check presentation to HCC Ag's Soil Science lab were (left to right): Justin Ebert, Ag Program instructor; Derek Quies, PCE Agronomy Salesman; Marshall Fink, Justin Lott, and Jordan Hale, Highland Ag students;  Tim Hood, HCC President;  Pennie Groezinger, PCE Human Resources Manager; Kevin Heimerdinger, PCE Grain Merchandiser, holding his son Brayden; Scott Anderson, HCC Dean of Business and Technology and Kim Rampenthal, HCC Foundation Director of Fundraising.
