Highland ranks number three in 10 best community colleges in Illinois

Highland Community College has been ranked number three in "The 10 best community colleges in Illinois," which was recently published by USA Today College. The ranking was conducted by schools.com and was based on "total attendance cost, student-faculty ratio, distance education focus and transfer rate to four-year institutions, among other factors."

According the study, Highland was considered among the 48 schools within the Illinois Community College System and each institution was scored on a scale using a seven data point system that looked at the following:

  • Percentage of students enrolled in distance education
  • Cost of attendance
  • Student-to-faculty ratio
  • Average retention rate for full-and-part-time students
  • Graduation rate
  • Transfer rate to a senior institutions
  • Flexibility score (based on three data points from the National Center for Education Statistics)

Data points were taken from reports published by the National Center for Education Statistics, The Department of Education’s College Scorecard, and Illinois Community College Board.

Placing third behind Olney Central College and Lincoln Trail College, Highland is considered a standout academic institution for being one of the top schools to take online courses. Highland prides itself on keeping the costs of books and supplies low, which attributes to students averaging an expense of less than $1,000 in this category. Based on total cost of attendance, Highland was ranked among the 10 most affordable community colleges in the state.

It was also pointed out that Highland provides students with a wealth of support services that assist students in transitioning to the college experience through the Success Center, "where faculty and staff provide peer-tutoring services, study groups, review sessions, communications skills courses, a first-year experience seminar and other resources for guidance and support that can help contend with academics and social challenges that most students face."
