Clarence Mitchell Library at HCC presents National Poetry month program
4/6/2016

Highland Community College's Clarence Mitchell Library is pleased to offer a program for National Poetry Month. Guest speaker, Demetrius Amparan, a teaching artist from Young Chicago Authors (YCA), will lead the spoken word poetry workshop at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, in the Student Conference Center in room H-201.

Spoken word art, otherwise known as performance poetry, involves speaking out and sharing personal experiences. It's a medium that has been gathering interest around the globe in high-profile venues such as the White House and Vancouver Winter Olympics, as well as open mic nights at corner cafes. YCA encourages participants to put their experiences down on paper and share them. YCA founder, Kevin Coval, writes, "Our stories are more resilient than empires, are louder than bombs. You are here. This is undeniable. Give it a shot. Record the world(s) around you. Write it all down. The world is waiting to hear from you."

Demetrius "Demi" Amparan is an HBO featured rapper, poet and performer hailing from Chicago. Amparan is a daring performer who is able to cleverly take on many topics (racial inequality, poverty, failed relationships) and present them from a fresh perspective. A great amount of his work is inspired by his upbringing in Chicago’s inner city. His ability to engage audiences and thoughtfully express feelings that many people keep to themselves is what garnered him acclaim. Bio information courtesy of Young Chicago Authors.
