HCC presents Spring Band and Youth Choir Concert

On Thursday, May 5, the Concert Band and Highland Youth Choir will perform their spring instrumental and vocal music concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre in the Ferguson Fine Arts Center located on the Highland campus.

Directed by Scott Stich, the Highland Concert Band will be playing the music of John Williams, Samuel Hazo, Percy Grainger, Paul Hindemith and Robert Sheldon.

The Stars Wars medley by John Williams will lead off the concert. This will be followed by a light and enjoyable Gaelic tune by Sam Hazo. There will also be the "Children’s March" by Percy Grainger, based on an English folk song that celebrates the exuberance of child-like play and the excitement of youth. "March," taken from Paul Hindemith's "Symphonic Metamorphosis" is the final movement of that four movement work. Hendemith’s march is not like the Sousa march. The concert will close with a Robert Sheldon piece entitled "Danzas Cubana." Danzas celebrates the joy and energy of a Cuban dance. Stich said, "It's exciting, it's salsa, it's a mambo."

The Highland Youth Choir is under the direction of Dagny Brandt and accompanied by Heidi Spotts-Manthey. The choir will present "Broadway Beat," musical highlights from over a century of song and dance.

The concert is free and open to the public.
