HCC's Early October Lifelong Learning Courses Beginning
9/16/2016

Highland Community College Lifelong Learning is offering upcoming courses on campus and other locations for early October. Some of the classes to be offered are: Computers Made Easy for Seniors, Conversational Spanish, Facebook for Businesses, Intro to Ashtanga Yoga, How to Trade Stocks and Bonds and more.

The vision of Highland's Lifelong Learning is to serve all populations throughout the College's four-county district, including community members, seniors, and the region's business professionals.

Ballroom Dancing B

Instructor: Julie Dale - Julie has owned her own studio for more than 30 years in Sterling. She also teaches Ballroom Dancing for Sauk Valley and Rock Valley.

This non-threatening, hands-on class will help you ease into computer-age technology and become familiar with the jargon, concepts and basic operations of computers.

Conversational Spanish

Instructor: Cecilia Van Heeren - Are you traveling where they speak Spanish?  Cecilia will help you learn to communicate when you travel.

This course in Spanish will start with a variety of topics at basic level. It will cover grammar and structure absolutely necessary for speaking. The primary objective is pronunciation and vocabulary building.

Facebook for Businesses-Highland

Instructor:  Lee Dixon – Lee has been a part of the Facebook community since 2002 before the company had a business model that consisted of advertising platforms. Lee is a technologist, given his background and experience with many different kinds of technology.  He has an innate knack for finding the synergetic principles in every application he uses and loves teaching and helping people discover this as well. He has an AAS in Graphic Design from Highland Community College, a B.S. in Interactive Media Design from The Art Institute, and is currently finishing up an MBA from Columbia College with his main focus on marketing psychology, technology, and data analysis.

How to Trade Stocks and Bonds

Instructor: Michael Jazo - Michael is a Vice President for Zacks Investment Management and has worked in the investment industry for 30 years. He has been with Zacks since 2000. He currently manages 175 million dollars for 350 high net worth individuals.  Prior to Zacks, Michael was an Assistant Vice-President with First Options of Chicago from 1988-2000 and worked on the floor of the Chicago Board Options Exchange from 1987-1988. Michael received a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Illinois University in 1987 with a double major in Finance and Operations Management. Do you trade stocks online? How do you decide which stocks to purchase and which ones to sell? This class will help you develop and maintain a stock trading system using both fundamental and technical analysis. The goal of this class is to help you make better trading decisions that will lead to better performance returns. Give a person a stock pick and you feed him for a day. Teach a person how to pick stocks and you feed him for a lifetime.

Intro to Ashtanga Yoga
Course ID: 3848 Location: Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies

Instructor:  Sarah Conners - Sarah is the Assistant Director at the International Preservation Studies Center (formerly known as the Campbell Center) in Mount Carroll, Illinois. She became a certified yoga instructor through Yoga Alliance in 2016 after completing the 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training certification program at Tapas Yoga Shala in Rock Island, Illinois. Sarah has been a practitioner of yoga for over five years and is eager to share her love and knowledge of the practice with anyone interested in starting a practice of their own.

This is a great course for those who want to start a yoga practice but don't know where to start. During this course, students will be introduced to basic warm-up postures, sun salutations A & B, standing postures, balancing postures, and seated postures, the history and lineage of Ashtanga, and ways to live a yoga lifestyle. We will also cover meditation and proper breathing techniques. Come discover how adding yoga to your daily routine can improve your physical and mental well-being. See you on the mat! Please bring your own yoga mat.

Italian Cuisine

A culinary arts course focused on the basics of Italian cuisine and how to prepare these dishes from scratch: Pesto, Pasta, Ravioli, Zuppa, Toscana, Manicotti. Students are encouraged to bring containers for food storage as all food prepared in class is theirs to keep. Before taking this course, it is recommended that students have basic knowledge of food preparation.

Reiki I
Course ID: 3822 Location: N-166

Instructors: Suzanne Miller, RMT and Paula Schmoldt, RMT - Suzanne has practiced Usui Reiki for almost 10 years and has been a Certified Reiki Master Teacher for 8. She has been a certified Raindrop Therapy Practitioner since 2011 and frequently uses essential oils to aid in healing, as well as for preventative health care and maintenance. She has practiced the art of meditation for several years and strives to incorporate these multiple modalities into everyday living, creating a balanced and holistic life experience. Paula is very interested in holistic health and is a Certified Reiki Master Teacher.  She also has experience in teaching meditation and the Chakras.

Students will learn about the origins of Reiki, the use of White Light Energy, and receive training in hand placement to correctly implement this hands-on therapy. Participants will also receive two attunements and certification as Reiki I practitioners, preparing them for Level II learning. No previous experience is needed.

TV Mounting in Your Home

Instructor:  Mike Gunderson - Michael is employed as Highland's Audio/Visual Specialist. Michael joined Highland in 2007 and came with over 20 years of experience in the video and video production field. In his capacity of running the A/V department, Michael is also the resident A/V contractor on campus.  He's responsible for designing, installing and maintaining all of the presentation technology in HCC's classrooms and conference center. In his time here, he has designed and installed sound systems, LCD projectors, interactive projectors, collaboration tables/solutions and numerous flat panel TVs. Mike's teaching style is a hands-on approach, and if you enroll in one of his classes, you will probably be asked to participate in the installation process.

Would you like to learn how to hang your TV on the wall and don’t know where to start? During this hands-on class, Mike Gunderson, Highland's A/V Specialist, and resident A/V Installer, will show you mounting techniques, types of mounts and how to hide the wires inside the wall.
