HCC Early Childhood Education and YMCA Children's Center hold open house on Oct. 12
10/5/2016

Freeport - The Highland Community College Early Childhood Education program is collaborating with the YMCA Early Learning Center to hold a joint open house on Wednesday, September 12, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.  Interested families and prospective early childhood education students are encouraged to attend to find out more about the center and new dedicated learning space.

Located adjacent to the YMCA on Highland's campus, the YMCA Early Learning Center serves families with children age 6 weeks to 10 years old and strives to nurture and encourage the natural curiosity and creativeness of children. The curriculum is based on the values of the YMCA and the Illinois Early Learning Standards.

Beginning this fall, the HCC Early Childhood Education (ECE) program maintains a dedicated classroom for training students in Highland's ECE classes. The room is designed to not only meet the needs of Highland students, with adult table and chairs, but there are materials and space available for students to apply and practice skills utilizing the materials in the classroom.

According to ECE instructor, Melissa Johnson, "There will be more opportunities to collaborate with other programs and provide more hands-on experiences for students to work with children and families. Materials are readily available for ECE instructors to utilize that stay in the classroom so that there is less need for instructors to carry materials from alternate locations."

It allows the opportunity for students to work on projects and be able to leave them in the classroom and not be disturbed.  ECE instructors encourage students to work on long-term projects with older children, and they will be able to demonstrate how to carry out the projects, according to Johnson.

The space is flexible so that if needed tables could be folded down and a larger floor space made available to do activities with children.

"With dedicated space, students can embrace and take ownership and pride in their space," said Johnson.
