Patrick Jackson is the new Upward Bound Coordinator at Highland Community College. Jackson has a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from the University of Florida and a Master’s in Education from North Central University. He is also a 2010 graduate from Freeport High School, and graduated from Highland in 2012.
Previously he was a teacher’s associate for Citizens of the World Charter School, and was a program leader for an after school program for Parker-Anderson in the Los Angeles area.
“My vision for Upward Bound is to take the program to new heights,” Jackson said. “I am excited for this journey with all the peaks and obstacles that will come along with it. Students often do not realize how powerful they are and I will help them bring these strengths to reality. There is no greater reward than getting youth to truly value education and taking full advantage of the opportunities education presents.”
A TRIO program funded by the Department of Education, Upward Bound helps students overcome class, social, academic, and cultural barriers to higher education. Upward Bound was created in 1965, and now serves approximately 53,000 students in 722 Upward Bound projects nationwide.
Upward Bound helps students move through the possibility of college during high school. Upward Bound invests in the student’s futures with programs such as: Academic advising; Academic coaching; College visits and information; Cultural enrichment; Assistance with financial aid and scholarships; SAT preparation; Summer academic classes; Career internships and community involvement, and Leadership training.
Upward Bound provides support, motivation, and college preparation experience to 60 high school students from the Freeport School District. To be eligible, parents or guardians at the student’s residence cannot have a four-year college degree. Income levels may also be considered. Upward Bound is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. There is no cost to become a member.
