Submission Guidelines

Submissions of poetry, short prose, visual art, and music are welcome from Highland Community College students, alumni, faculty, staff, and all residents of the Highland Community College district.

All submissions are reviewed for possible publication by an editorial board composed of students and volunteer community members. The editorial board is guided by a team of faculty advisors. The views expressed in the publication do not necessarily reflect the views of Highland Community College or its employees.

Please follow the guidelines below when preparing your submission.

Poetry and short prose:

All submissions must include the author’s name, as you wish it to appear in the magazine, title of piece, or the designation “untitled.” Submission by e-mail is preferred, but hardcopy submissions are accepted. Short prose must be 1,000 or fewer words.

If submitting by e-mail, either enter the text directly into the body of your e-mail message, or attach a file from the commonly-used word processor such as Microsoft Word. Please avoid complex formatting, esoteric fonts, or other special features that may cause difficulty in opening or reading the file. If you are making multiple submissions, please separate them into individual attachments, or individual e-mail messages.

Send your e-mail submissions to:

If submitting hardcopy, you may either send it to us through US mail, or drop off your submission in person. Hardcopy should be mailed to:

Tracy Mays
Humanities/Social Science Division, Bldg. M
Highland Community College
2998 West Pearl City Road
Freeport, IL 61032

If you’d like to drop off your hardcopy in person, please label it for the attention of Tracy Mays and bring it to the Humanities and Social Sciences Division office on the second floor of Building M at Highland’s main campus. Hard copy submissions are returned only if accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

There is a limit of five pieces per issue for each submitter.

Visual Art:

All submissions must be accompanied by the artist’s name, as you wish it to appear in the magazine, title of piece, or the designation “untitled.” You may submit the original piece or digital files via e-mail or disk.

If you submit the original piece, we recommend downloading the submission form and bringing it in with your work. We ask that you leave the piece with us long enough for it to be viewed by the editorial board and, if accepted for publication, to be photographed by our designers. This process can take several weeks. Art may be picked up after the magazine goes to press, usually during the last week of April. Other arrangements can be made by contacting prairie wind staff.

Deliver your submission original art to:

Bob Apolloni 815-599-3479
Fine Arts Department (Building F), Highland Community College
(Note: Art accepted into the annual juried District Exhibit is automatically considered for publication in the Prairie Wind.)

If you submit via e-mail or disk, please prepare the digital image of your work according to the following specifications before attaching it to your message or committing it to disk:

File format: JPG, JPEG, or TIF (Please do not save as PCX, BMP or GIF.)

If scanning, scan in “True Color” or “RGB Color” or “Millions of Colors” and capture at 300 PPI.
