Highland to bring Chamber Music Recital to stage

With a collaboration between the Highland Concert Band and the Highland Orchestra, the Chamber Music Recital will be on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre in the Ferguson Fine Arts Center, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

The concert will feature chamber music in the form of percussion ensembles, string quartets, with flute, clarinet, woodwind, and brass choirs. The repertoire will include music of the masters.

The music of Beethoven, Rossini, Haydn, Brahms, Faure,’ Bach, Prokofiev, Handel, Saint-Saens, and Paul McCartney will be performed during the concert. There will be compositions by David Stone, John Pratt, John Beck, and Murray Houllif.

“This year the Highland College Concert Band members are going to perform their annual recital in February by welcoming members of the Highland Orchestra while playing as many of the masters as we can in small group ensembles,” said Scott Stich, conductor of Concert Band.

Stich adds, “The idea of a recital is to feature smaller groups and solos so we can create different sounds and timbre for the audience. We call these ‘chamber groups’ because they can exist and perform in smaller rooms and halls.”

Featured are brass, woodwind, flute, clarinet, mallet percussion choirs, and the Chamber Wind Ensemble that plays as the Orchestra Winds. Also featured are a woodwind quintet, two string quartets, as well as three percussion solo and duet ventures.

“Our best gift to the world is to keep performing live music for the public so that we never lose these cherished gifts of sound,” Stich said.

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information on Fine Arts, visit highland.edu.
