Highland brings ‘Heathers: The Musical’ to the Fine Arts Stage

Highland Community College Theatre Arts program presents “Heathers: The Musical” with performances on March 5, 6, and 7 at 7:30 p.m.in the Fine Arts Theatre in the Ferguson Fine Arts Center, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

The musical is brought by the award-winning creative team of Kevin Murphy (“Desperate Housewives”), Laurence O’Keefe (“Bat Boy,” “Legally Blonde”) and Andy Fickman (“She’s the Man”). “Heathers: The Musical” is a hilarious, heartfelt, and homicidal show based on the 1988 film of the same name. With its moving score, laugh-out-loud comedy, and unflinching look at the anguish of high school, this musical is a cautionary satire.

“’Heathers: The Musical’ addresses very serious topics through humor,” said Laura Early, Director and Theatre Arts Instructor. “The campy and over the top humor is not used to make light of serious situations, but rather, it is used to illuminate them and have us think. I find the musical a cautionary satire about the perils of extremes. It also has a strong anti-bullying message.”

The cast of Highland Community College’s production of “Heathers: The Musical” is comprised of 17 college students from Freeport, Lena, Stockton, Dakota, and Mount Carroll. At least nine of the students in the cast are past winners and/or nominees for the Voices Awards, which honors the best in high school theatre performances in the area.

Alex Jansen, Fine Arts Technical Coordinator is designing the set, lights, and sound for the production. Jeffrey DeLay is Music Director. Karley Morton is Assistant Director. Robert Walker is Choreographer.

This musical contains strong language and mature content. Parental guidance is suggested for audience members 17 years and under. No one under 14 years old will be admitted.
