Fall Colors Guided Walking Tour

Participants will take a guided walking tour of Howard Colman Hall Creek Preserve with Superintendent of Education Mark Herman. The Illinois Nature Preserve sits on 321 acres with a clear running creek, oak-hickory forests, oak savannas, and prairie ecosystems.
The Assassination of Garfield

Participants will learn about the assassination of President James Garfield from the shooting on the morning of July 2, 1881, to his death on Sept. 19, 1881. The discussion includes biographies of Garfield and assassin Charles Guiteau (with ties to Freeport), US culture, medical treatment, and the capture, trial, and execution of Guiteau will be explored.
Basic Birding

Participants will learn to identify many of the common birds that reside in or migrate through northwest Illinois. Basic birding techniques, as well as bird adaptations and behaviors, will be covered through photographs and bird specimens in the classroom. Handouts will be provided. Attendees have the option to bring a personal field guide.
Computers and Mobile Devices

Participants will examine the characteristics of laptops, tablets, desktops, and all-in-ones as well as mobile devices including smartphones, digital cameras, media players, and wearable devices. Vandalism, failure, and ways to prevent hardware theft and technology-related injuries will be covered.
Creative Hairstyles for Little Girls
