HCC presents Spring Concert Band performance

FREEPORT — On Friday, May 5, the Concert Band will perform their spring instrumental concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre in the Ferguson Fine Arts Center located on the Highland campus.

Directed by Scott Stich, the Highland Concert Band will be playing the music of Percy Grainger, Ludwig van Beethoven, Gustav Holst, Frank Ticheli and Carl Strommen.

The Concert Band is covering four composers who have made landmark contributions to the music literature of the world. Stich said, “Carl Strommen is the least known, but his contribution to this concert will be exciting and fun for our audience.”

Special guests for this spring’s concert will be the Eastland High School Concert Band conducted by Benjamin Randecker.

“Molly” is a “fiddle tune” that traditionally would have been a dance tune for the masses.  Beethoven’s “7th Symphony” gets played less than most of his popular symphonies, but the second movement is haunting and relevant for many listeners. “The Planets” is known worldwide and “Jupiter” is a multi-movement work within a work. “Rest” was originally written by Ticheli as a choral work by the name of “There Will Be Rest.” Finally, “Fuego” is a fiery Spanish tune complete with rousing trumpet solos and all the energy of a Spanish dance movement.

The concert is free and open to the public.
