Introduction to Beekeeping

Allen Reed has been a backyard beekeeper for nine years. Join him as he shares some of the pitfalls and joys of this ancient yet modern craft-art-science-hobby-business. In class, he will discuss the history of beekeeping, the life cycle of the honeybee, and management of hives throughout the year. He will also discuss modern equipment choices, honey extraction, sales, and of course, sample some of the sweet rewards of beekeeping. No equipment or experience needed.

In accordance with the NCCDP (National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners), students will gain a better understanding of this disease and the proper care techniques to ease both the patient and caregiver. Fee includes the cost of the $50 textbook. After completion, each student will have the opportunity to apply for certification and dementia care for an additional fee.

There will be a brief introduction before the showing and a discussion afterward. Two Latina sisters work as cleaners in a downtown office building in Los Angeles and fight for the right to unionize. The movie is based on the “Justice for Janitors” campaign.

Learn about the public work relief program in the United States for unemployed, unmarried young men ages 17-28. The CCC was the most popular of the New Deal programs and led to greater public awareness and appreciation of the outdoors and the nation’s natural resources. Enrollees of the CCC planted nearly 3 billion trees, constructed trails, lodges, and related facilities in more than 800 parks nationwide among other tasks. The enrollees also upgraded most state parks, updated forest fighting methods, and built a network of service buildings and public roadways in remote areas.

Learn how three dimensional solid objects are created as a digital file and then printed as a 3D model. The course will also summarize the features of several types of 3D printers and how these printers are being utilized in homes and businesses. Watch a 3D printer in action and better understand the programming used to create the object.

Learn how to trace the history of your house. Who lived in it before you and what were their stories? When were additions added (or subtracted)? Who paid taxes (or not), how much, and for what? Abby Mielke from Sunny Hill Craft Company will lead this fun, do-it-yourself workshop where you will make your own one-of-a-kind concrete leaf casting formed over a real leaf. Your leaf casting can be used outside as a birdbath or garden art or you may choose to keep it inside as home decor. This is a two-day workshop. The first day you will create your leaf casting and the second day you will paint your leaf casting. You will walk away with a finished product that is ready to use. Multiple species of leaves will be available to choose from or you can bring your own.

Mail merge may be used to create personalized letters, pre-address envelopes, mailing labels and more. Create an Excel spreadsheet with the information to be personalized and to create the form in Word. This class will help you be successful in creating mail merged documents.
