Highland Community College is committed to supporting the needs of all individuals. It is recognized that gender identity is an intrinsic part of each person’s identity and everyday life.
Regarding restrooms, individuals may use the facilities that correspond with their gender identity.
Highland will convert a lesser used restroom in building N currently known as the “Faculty Women’s Restroom” into a single use restroom to be available for use by anyone. A basic renovation will be completed and the restroom will be ready for use the week of September 26.
A complete renovation of this restroom is included in the 2022 Bond Projects list for consideration. Due to the legal requirements and approval process for the bonds, it is estimated that we would not have the funds available from the bonds until February 2023. Highland, with the assistance of the college’s architect, will continue to consider options to provide single use restrooms in other buildings as funding becomes available. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
There is also a more private restroom (labeled as a family restroom) in the YMCA. If the individual does not have a Y pass, using their restroom does require being admitted at the front desk.
If there are any questions or concerns, these may be directed to Liz Gerber (students) or Karen Brown (employees).
