Learn culinary arts, genealogy, how to protect yourself from identity theft, traveling, how to be a fashion illustrator and more with Lifelong Learning courses. The following classes will begin by
Oct. 2.

Intro to Culinary Arts 

Location: St. John’s United Church of Christ, Freeport

Registration Deadline: Sept. 25; Class Dates: Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, Nov. 6; Class Time: 4 to 6 p.m.; Fee: $147

Instructor: Steve Konefes

A condensed introductory culinary arts course focused on these core principles of food preparation: knife skills, cooking techniques, balancing flavors, vegetable cookery, protein cookery, and culinary creativity. Students are encouraged to bring containers for food storage as all food prepared in class is theirs to keep.

Beginning Genealogy 

Location: Freeport Public Library, Freeport

Registration Deadline: Sept. 26; Class Dates: Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24; Class Time: 6 to 7 p.m.; Fee: $39

Instructor: Gary Price

Learn the basic forms and resources required and available to research the family tree and history. Learn about computer programs and websites. The culminating activity will be the creation of an ancestral chart completed by the student.

Computers for Seniors

Location: HCC/T-159

This non-threatening, hands-on class will help you ease into computer-age technology and become familiar with the jargon, concepts, and basic operations of computers.

Geography-U.S. Compared to the World

Registration Deadline: Sept. 26; Class Dates: Oct. 3, 10, 17; Class Time: 6 to 7:30 p.m.; Fee: $32.50

Instructor: Andrew Beach

This class will allow you to view and understand cultures from around the world. We will dissect practices and traditions of those in the U.S. and from around the globe, including food, marriage traditions, clothing, economy, technology, etc.

Identity Theft 

Location: HCC/H-208

Registration Deadline: Sept. 27; Class Date: Oct.4; Class Time: Noon to 1 p.m.; Fee: $10

Identity theft is our country’s fastest-growing crime and affects individuals from all walks of life.  This program warns residents of potential scams and provides valuable information on ways to protect themselves. Whether it’s paying at the gas pump, filing for your tax returns, or shopping online, ID thieves are always looking for ways to scam consumers. The instructor is Shannon McNeil from the Illinois Comptroller’s Office. Attendance is open to all. Course fee includes a boxed lunch for $10.00 (sandwich, chips, cookie, and water). Please register for Course ID # 3984 if you do not want the boxed lunch.

Have someone else’s treasures in your house? Turn your extra stuff into someone else’s treasures by selling on eBay. This seasoned eBay seller will offer tips and tricks to increase your selling price and success.

Adult Pattern Making 2

Location: HCC/H-210A

You will continue learning your more advanced formulas used to draft professional patterns from beginning to end for Ready-To-Wear and Custom garments. You will continue with your quarter scale patterns until completion.  Then it is time to move into the big league of pattern making.  Your full-scale pattern will begin here, and it will be completed in the Pattern Making 3 class. It’s highly recommended to take the Sewing/Tailoring 2 when taking this class to enhance and maximize your skills.  Register for the class through Highland.

Learn more about the special techniques that the top European and Domestic designers use in their clothing construction. You will begin the watch pocket, how to correctly use a thimble and needle and begin first of three hand stitches:  overcast, baste and the halfback.  It’s highly recommended to take the Pattern Drafting 2 when taking this class to enhance and maximize your skills. Being in Australia

Registration Deadline: Oct. 3; Class Dates: Oct. 10, 17, 24; Class Time: 7 to 8:30 p.m.; Fee: $59

Instructor:  Mark Peterson

This class takes a closer look at what it would be like to visit or live in Australia without the 20-hour flight. It explores a short history of Australia and its holidays, its geography, including seasons, and the different plants and animals.  It covers the major occupations, political parties, and religions of Australia. Time will be spent covering some of the Australian slang.  It will also cover the education system, and major sports played in Australia including Cricket, Rugby, and Aussies Rules Football.  This class will also cover some of the differences between life in Illinois and life in Australia.

Facebook for business will introduce some of the core concepts of building, managing and marketing your business or organization on Facebook. Fee includes the textbook.  Please have your Facebook page created.

3D Printing

Location: HCC/T-137

Registration Deadline: Oct. 4; Class Date: Oct. 11; Class Time: 6 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $25

Instructor: Jeremy Monigold

This course will introduce students to Additive Manufacturing/3D printing including how 3D printing is being applied across a number of domains, including design, manufacturing, and retailing; special capabilities of 3D printing such as customization, self-assembly, and the ability to print complex objects; and, demonstration of how 3D printers are made and how they work.

Adult Fashion Illustration 1

Location: HCC/H-210A

Registration Deadline: Oct. 5; Class Dates: Oct. 12, 19, 26; Class Time: 6 to 7:30 p.m.; Fee: $51

This class continues the Teens/Adult Fashion Drawing class, and it is highly suggested to be completed before the Fashion Illustration 1 class. In this intense class, students will discover the art of designing clothing. You will learn about a Fashion Croquis and its many uses in fashion sketching, as well as making one. This class will be continued with even more extreme details in our Fashion Illustration 2 class. Each week builds on the week prior so that students can continue to practice and sharpen their skills.
