FREEPORT — Highland Community College’s Clarence Mitchell Library will present “The Soil Project: Stories rooted in Freeport’s Black history,” at 10 a.m. February 24, 2026 in the Clarence Mitchell Library for Black History Month.
Documentarian, Danairo Thomas will present information about The Soil Project. The Soil Project is a documentary storytelling initiative dedicated to uncovering and celebrating the rich, often overlooked history of Black pioneers in Freeport, Illinois. Through extensive research, compelling interviews, and the exploration of cultural contributions, the project sheds light on untold stories and historical milestones. The Soil Project seeks to preserve local heritage, inspire future generations, and deepen public understanding of Black contributions to American history.
Danairo Thomas is a proud Son of Freeport who tells powerful stories through film and history. He created “The Soil Project” to shine a light on local Black changemakers whose impact reaches far beyond the city. He’s also taught Black history to over 1,500 students in Freeport’s schools and produced “Letter to My City”, a visual love letter to the place that raised him. Whether behind the camera or in front of a classroom, Danairo is on a mission: to preserve the past, empower the present, and inspire the future.
The event is free and open to all audiences. For more information on the program contact Laura Watson at 815-599-3456 or laura.watson@highland.edu.
