Highland Community College’s Clarence Mitchell Library is pleased to offer a program for the One Book, One Freeport initiative. Accomplished cultural geographer Norman Moline will present highlights of National Park Service (NPS) history including Yosemite National Park, part of the setting for the 2017, One Book, One Freeporttitle, “Gloryland,” by Shelton Johnson.
“The National Park Service at Age 100” will take place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, in the Clarence Mitchell Library at Highland. The National Park Service (NPS), sometimes described as “America’s Best Idea,” celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016. The NPS set aside sites that are particularly beautiful, scientifically or historically significant, and made them available to the public on a scale unprecedented in world history.
Norman Moline is Professor Emeritus of Geography at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, and is a current resident of Rock Island. His teaching career has spanned 45 years, and his specialties include cultural geography, historical geography of the United States, and land resources management.
The event is being produced in part by the Illinois Humanities Council’s (IHC) Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, a program that provides organizations statewide with affordable, entertaining, and thought-provoking humanities events for communities. A roster of speakers, hailing from 20 different towns and cities across Illinois, present topics in history, culture, literature, music, politics, law, science, and more.
The Clarence Mitchell Library is committed to the success of the Highland community, students, faculty and staff in learning, teaching, and research. The mission of the One Book, One Freeport program is to encourage a shared reading experience, foster a sense of community and promote literacy to people of all ethnic backgrounds, economic levels, and ages. One Book, One Freeport coordinates educational programs and events to explore topics related to a selected book. The Illinois Humanities Council is an independent, nonprofit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, dedicated to fostering a culture in which the humanities are a vital part of the lives of individuals and communities.
