HCC Lifelong Learning April classes

Highland Community College Lifelong Learning has courses ready for students in April. April courses include Ballroom Dance, French Cuisine, Computer Security, and more. Below are the course descriptions and further information.

Tamales

Location: St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1010 S. Park Blvd., Freeport, Ill.

Registration Deadline: March 26; Class Date: April 2; Class Time: 5 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $45

Instructor: Michael Staver

Tamales begin with a dough made from masa, mixed with lard or vegetable shortening, then wrapped in corn husks or plantain leaves, then steamed. The region determines if corn husks or plantain leaves would be used. Please bring dishes to take food home in.

Manifesting Your Desires

Location: Highland Community College, Building H, room 210, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd, Freeport, Ill.

Ballroom Dance-Foxtrot

Ballroom Dance-Waltz

Excel Introduction

Learn how to organize daily life using the rows and cells of spreadsheets.

Trip to Sydney, Australia

Location: Highland Community College, Building H, room 210, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

This one-time class makes a virtual trip to Sydney, Australia. It covers a very brief history of Australia and its climate. The discussion includes the different animals encountered, including kangaroos, wombats, koalas, rainbow lorikeets, spiders, snakes, and crocodiles. Life at work, at home, and at school; major attractions in Australia; and some of the differences in language and sports will also be discussed.

French Cuisine II

No prerequisites, French cuisine options are endless. If you took the class before, learn additional recipes and techniques. If you did not take the first class, fine, no problem. No prior knowledge is required to enjoy this wonderful cuisine. Please bring containers to take food home in.

3D Printing

Location: Highland Community College, Building T, room 137, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

Learn how three dimensional solid objects are created as a digital file and then printed as a 3D model. The course will summarize the features of several types of 3D printers and how these printers are utilized in homes and businesses. Watch a 3D printer in action and better understand the programming used to create the object.

Computer Security

How often should you check for viruses and malware? How does a computer behave if infected? How do you prevent it? Learn how to check your own computer for viruses, malware, how to keep your computer protected at all times, and signs your computer infection signs.

Maintaining Your Car-Checking Oil, Tires, Etc.

Location: Highland Community College, Building T, room 123/ 124, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

What types of fluids are needed and the service intervals recommended for vehicle longevity are topics covered in this class. Lab tasks will allow participants to become familiar with the under hood layout of their vehicle and basic maintenance procedures. The first part of the class will be classroom and the second part will be hands-on tasks in the lab. Bring your car and comfortable clothes.

Make a Wish: Road Scholar Travel Discoveries

Location: Jo Daviess County Senior Resource Center, 410 Fillmore St. Hanover, Ill.

Have you ever wanted to ride historic railroads in Colorado? Attend Oregon Shakespeare Festival? Go birding in the Ecuadorian Andes? Or discover Revolutionary War facts in Boston? Road Scholar Ambassador Kathleen Weber will share lifelong learning opportunities for those 50 and better. She has experienced New Mexico’s geological sites; New Orleans’ history and music; canoeing on southern Illinois’ Cache River wetlands; Puerto Rico’s art, nature, and culture; a Door County culinary adventure; and a creative writer’s workshop in Green Lake, Wisconsin.
