Beginning Watercolor Workshop

Each session consists of a short lecture, a demo, student exercises, creative time, and helpful critiques. Basics include subject selection, composition, color theory, and special watercolor techniques. Printed handouts are provided each session to allow for catch-ups for missed sessions and to provide reference material for future use.
The Great Train Chase of 1862
Location: Bertolet Memorial Library Leaf River

A Confederate Train is stolen by Union saboteurs in a bold attempt to disrupt rebel rail traffic. The secret mission was intended to damage transportation by helping Union forces capture a key rail junction and thus shorten the war. How was the mission planned and executed? Who was involved and was it a success or failure? A few members of the class will assume roles and will participate as the story is told. A professional video of the Chase will be shown, followed by discussion. Take home material provided and information about where the locomotive can be seen today in Georgia.
American Lumber Saga & The Upper Mississippi

In this course, students will follow the many rises and falls of various American lumber capitals and discover the role the Upper Mississippi River had in the American lumber saga. In the end, students will understand that Clinton, Iowa can be called an American lumber capital. Saturday, 5/6/2017 will be a tour of the museum in Clinton, Iowa.

Ever thought about brewing your own beer? Maybe you already do and are considering a career in the new booming craft brewing industry. This three-week course could be just for you and will help you understand the entire brewing process on both a small and large scale! We’ll cover brewing ingredients, equipment, procedures, packaging, and even tasting sensory analysis. Steve Winter was the Brewmaster at Galena Brewing Company before opening his own business with his dad, Mark, in 2013. Harvey has authored a book on the brewing history of northern Illinois, and his knowledge of the brewing industry is well known.

Know the 10 Signs: Early Detection Matters-The warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease are often dismissed as side effects of normal aging. If you or someone you know is experiencing memory loss or behavioral changes, it’s time to learn the facts. Early detection gives you a chance to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies and plan for the future. This is a lunch and learn class that will teach you the ten warning signs of Alzheimer’s. Registration fee includes a box lunch (sandwich, chips, cookie and water).
