HCC Lifelong Learning Courses slated to begin middle January

Highland Community College Lifelong Learning has courses ready for students in 2018. Courses starting after Jan. 20 are Introduction to Shopify; Pattern Making; African-American Genealogy; Vegetarian Cooking, and more. Below are the course descriptions and further information.

Introduction to Shopify

Location: HCC/H-210

Registration Deadline: Jan. 15; Class Dates: Jan. 22, 29; Class Time: 6:30 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $47

Instructor: Bobby Shallenberger

Shopify is an online business platform to sell your products and services without needing to know any coding. The largest advantage to Shopify is its ability to drop-ship products around the world with no money invested in inventory.

Pattern Making A

Location: HCC/H-210

Registration Deadline: Jan. 18; Class Dates: Jan. 25, Feb. 1, 8; Class Time: 7:30 to 9 p.m.; Fee: $75

Instructor: Eric W. Stiles

Learn how to draft professional patterns, but first you must learn the rules of drafting and how to use the drafting equipment. Learn how to correctly take the needed measurements.  You will learn the formulas used by the top European and Domestic designers of the world. You will learn to draft patterns from beginning to end for ready-to-wear and custom garments. Stop wasting time and money and using commercial patterns.  Learn to make your own, and start designing your own line of clothing that will fit and enhance your body. These are the same formulas used by all of the top European and Domestic designers of the world. 

Sewing/Tailoring A

Instructor: Eric W. Stiles

Non-sewers, beginners, intermediate, and advanced sewers are welcome to learn how to sew from the Master Tailor-Designer Eric W. Stiles Sr., former top Supervisor and Head Tailor-Fitter for Giorgio Armani, Polo Ralph Lauren, and others. Stop making  “home-made looking” clothing, learn how to make clothes like the professionals.  In this class, we will cover machine set-up and two types of seams.  It’s highly recommended to take the Sewing/Tailoring and the Pattern Making classes together to enhance and maximize your skills. No sewing experience is required. Materials list will be provided before the first day of class. (Supplies are not included in the price of the course).  You will need to bring your sewing machine to class.  Register for class through Highland.

African-American Genealogy

Location: Freeport Public Library

Registration Deadline: Jan. 23; Class Dates: Jan. 30, Feb. 6; Class Time: 6 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $39

Instructor: Terry Feinberg

Participants learn about the variety of potential avenues to trace their African-American ancestors that goes beyond the documents and family trees found on Ancestry.com.  The use of DNA tests to determine which African nation, or nations, their ancestors came from will also be briefly addressed in the course.

Vegetarian Cooking II

Location: St. John’s United Church of Christ, Freeport

Whether you took the class last year or not, all new recipes will be offered. This delicious and healthy cuisine may include soups, stews, sauces for pasta, pilafs, ragus, muffins, and maybe a few cakes! Please bring containers to take food home in.

Basic Look at the Civil War, 1861-1865

Location: Galena Public Library, Galena

Introductory course on the American Civil War (1861-1865). Topics include events leading up to the war, deciding battles, Civil War medicine, the home front, and reconstruction.

Black Hawk War in Upper Midwest

Location: HCC/H-117

Registration Deadline: Jan. 30; Class Dates: Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27, Mar. 6; Class Time: 7 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $42

Instructor: Allen Reed

In April 1832, the “British Band” of the Sauk and Fox tribes, led by the redoubtable warrior Black Hawk, crossed the Mississippi River from Iowa to Illinois in a last desperate effort to reclaim their home town of Saukenuk from the white settlers they felt had taken the land illegally. This event led to the governor of Illinois calling out the state militia and the US Army sending troops to track down Black Hawk and his followers. The following months saw violence erupt between the Native Americans and the troops chasing them until the final battle at Bad Axe in August. This class will trace the history of the conflict between the Sauk and the settlers and follow the events of what came to be called the Black Hawk War.

Do you have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear? Learn how to flatter your figure with Figure Out Your Figure. Whether you purchase or sew your clothes, this course is for you. Learn to identify your figure type to choose clothing and/or patterns that flatter your figure including necklines and accessories.  You may choose to take Altering a Purchased Pattern to learn what alterations to make to flatter your figure.

Spanish Movie Night

Location: HCC/H-201A

Become more understanding of diversity and multiculturalism by exploring various aspects of different Hispanic cultures. All movies are in Spanish with English subtitles, internationally acclaimed, and have been chosen very carefully for their cultural and historical significance.  There will be a brief introduction before the showing and a discussion afterward. Recently retired criminal court investigator decides to write a novel based on a 25-year-old unresolved rape and murder case, which still haunts him. Academy Award Winner (Best Foreign Language Film) 2009. Come and discuss history, mystery, (in) justice, personal fulfillment.  This CRN number is for students.

Introduction to Chakras

This course will outline the seven chakras, each one’s importance, and how these energy centers are connected to our physical, mental, and spiritual selves. Learn each chakra’s purpose, function, and the effects of a blocked chakra.

Overview of Customer Targeting Using Facebook

Overview of Facebook ad manager, power editor, and audience insights. Have a basic understanding of how Facebook targeting works and insight on how to increase your sales via Facebook ads.

Basic Digital Photography

Instructor: Gary Gullett

This action-packed class will show you how to create and care for interesting digital photos! We will cover the basics of digital photography. You will learn elements of composition, exposure control, photographing people, close-up, action, and low-light photography. We will also spend time on the “how to” of sharing images and storing your photos. Bring your camera and gain the confidence you need to take great photos time and time again.
