HCC Lifelong Learning Courses slated to begin in September

Highland Community College Lifelong Learning is offering a full schedule of courses this fall. Southeast Asian Cuisine

Location: St. John’s United Church of Christ, Freeport

Registration Deadline: Sept. 11; Class Date: Sept. 18; Class time: 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.; Fee: $45

Instructor: Michael Staver

Southeast Asian is a very aromatic cuisine that includes the countries of Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, the southern part of China, and the Philippines, and includes such classic dishes such as Padtha. Recipes usually include rice, lime, cilantro, ginger, and chilies. Please bring containers to take food home with you.

Adult Pattern Making 1

Location: HCC/H-210A

Registration Deadline: Sept.12; Class Dates: Sept. 19, 26, Oct. 3; Class time: 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.; Fee: $75

Learn how to draft professional patterns, but first, you must learn the rules of drafting, how to use the drafting equipment, and how to correctly take the needed measurements.  Throughout the pattern-making series of classes, you will learn the formulas used by the top European and domestic designers of the world. Learn to draft patterns from beginning to end for ready-to-wear and custom garments. Learn to make your own, save money, and start designing your own line of clothing that will fit and enhance your body.  In this class, you will begin with the quarter scale pattern drafting. As you continue with the series, you will start on the full-scale pattern. It’s highly recommended to take the Sewing/Tailoring 1 with this class to enhance and maximize your skills. No drafting experience is required. A materials list will be provided before the first day of class. (Supplies are not included in the cost of the course).  Register for the class through Highland Community College.

Adult Sewing-Tailoring 1

Location: HCC/H-210A

Non-sewers, beginners, intermediate, and advanced sewers are welcome to learn how to sew from the Master Tailor-Designer Eric W. Stiles Sr., former top Supervisor and Head Tailor-Fitter for Giorgio Armani, Polo Ralph Lauren, and others Stop making those “home-made looking” clothing, learn how to make them like the professionals.  In this class, we will cover machine set-up and two types of seams.  It’s highly recommended to take the Sewing/Tailoring I and the Pattern Making I classes together, to enhance and maximize your skills. No sewing experience is required.

Creating Documents with Word

Location: HCC/T-159

Want to make the word processor work for you rather than getting frustrated trying to complete documents?  Uncover the mystery and stop being frustrated. Take this class to learn how word processors function and be able to work with them rather than against them.

Death in the White House

Location: Stephenson County Senior Resource Center, Freeport

This class takes a closer look at the deaths and near deaths of the Presidents that have occurred while they were in office. It covers the four natural deaths of Harrison, Taylor, Harding, and FDR. It also covers the four assassinations of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy. It also takes a look at the near death of Wilson and near assassination of Reagan.

Introducing Genetic Genealogy

Location: Freeport Public Library, Freeport

This introductory course will help participants understand genetic genealogy (DNA tests for ethnicity) and discuss how to make the most of DNA test results to further your family trees.  Participants who already have DNA ethnicity test results should bring a printout of those results for in-class discussion.  A brief discussion of the value of different tests and testing companies will also be included in the course.

Teens/Adult Fashion Drawing

Location: HCC/210A

If you enjoy drawing and love fashion, you will learn how to merge the two.  In this drawing class, we will study and practice multiple drawing techniques, and focus on perspective, proportion, shading, and line work.  Students begin building a solid foundation through drawing techniques starting on the very first day of class. This course is ideal for beginners and intermediate future designers and is the first in a series of three classes.

Hello Fall DIY Sign Workshop

Location: Wishful Acres, 4679 N. Flansburg Rd., Lena, IL

Come and enjoy a night out with Meier Design House at Wishful Acres making a fun sign to decorate your home for the fall season. All supplies and materials are included in the cost. The sign is approximately 18” X 18”.  Homemade root beer will be available for purchase.

French Cuisine
