Practical Tips for Life in Retirement

Basic tips and key information to help you plan for a fulfilling and successful retirement.  Interactive discussion focuses on finances and budgeting, health care costs, investments, and how to retire “on purpose.”

Flow and Mix with Alcohol Ink

Location: Freeport Art Museum, 121 N. Harlem Ave., Freeport, Ill.

One of the latest trends in art is using special alcohol inks to paint colorful, impressionistic and intricate creations. Its ability to flow and mix makes it a blast to use, and wonderful results are guaranteed for even the beginner. All materials are provided.

Pattern Making A/Sewing/Tailoring A

Location: Highland Community College, Building H, room H-208, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

Learn how to draft professional patterns, but first, you must learn the rules of drafting and how to use the drafting equipment. Learn how to correctly take the needed measurements. You will learn the formulas used by the top European and domestic designers of the world. You will learn to draft patterns from beginning to end for ready-to-wear and custom garments. Stop wasting time and money and using commercial patterns. Learn how to make your own, and start designing your own line of clothing that will fit and enhance your body. These are the same formulas used by all of the top designers in the world.

 

Non-sewers, beginners, intermediate, and advanced sewers are welcome to learn how to sew from the Master Tailor-Designer Eric W. Stiles Sr., former top Supervisor and Head Tailor-Fitter for Giorgio Armani, Polo Ralph Lauren, and others. Stop making “home-made looking” clothing, learn how to make clothes like the professionals. In this class, we will cover the machine set-up and two types of seams. It’s highly recommended to take the Sewing/Tailoring and the Pattern Making classes together to enhance and maximize your skills. No sewing experience is required. The materials list will be provided before the first day of class. (Supplies are not included in the price).  You will need to bring your sewing machine to class. Register for the class through Highland.

Medicine of the Civil War

Location: Highland Community College, Building H, room H-210, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

Instructor: Gordon Dammann

The creation of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine started as the idea of Gordon E. Dammann, D.D.S., whose collection of medical artifacts from the Civil War forms the core of the museum’s holdings. He began collecting in 1972 and felt a museum would be a good way to share his collection. Dammann is the author of the three-volume Pictorial Encyclopedia of Civil War Medical Instruments and Equipment, co-author of Images of Civil War Medicine-A Photographic History, and editor of the reprint Memoirs of Jonathan Letterman, MD Surgeon of US Army 1861-1864.

World War II – Europe (1933-1945)

Location: Stephenson County Resource Center, 206 E. Stephenson St., Freeport, Ill.

Instructor: Mark Peterson

This class takes a closer look at World War II in Europe and North Africa. It examines the cultural background of Germany, Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and the Jews before the war.  It looks at the events that led to the Nazi attack on Poland. Time will be spent reviewing certain battles including Dunkirk, Battle of Britain, Battle of the Atlantic, Russia, North Africa, Sicily, Stalingrad, D-Day Battle of the Bulge, and Berlin. The class will also examine the view of Germany toward the war today and its effect on European neighbors. Session One: World War 1, European Backgrounds, Diplomacy Failure. Session Two: German Advance: From Poland to Stalingrad. Session Three: Allies Advance: Russia from the East; Allies from the West.

Zentangle

The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Zentangle art is non-representational and unplanned so you can focus on each stroke and not worry about the result. People who draw according to the Zentangle Method, describe their experiences as others describe the states of mindfulness and flow.

Pickleball for Beginners

Pickleball is a cross between badminton and tennis and is the fastest growing sport among baby boomers in America. It is played on a badminton-sized court with paddles, a wiffle-type ball and a net 34 inches high. This introductory course provides the opportunity to learn the team sport, including rules of the game, equipment to get started and provides a fun outlet for fitness, competition, and socialization.

The movie depicts the filming of a controversial film about Christopher Columbus in Cochabamba, Bolivia, where local people rise up against plans to privatize the water supply. There will be a brief introduction before the showing and a discussion afterward. Movies are in Spanish with English subtitles.

Why should you use cloud storage? Ever wonder what OneDrive, Google Drive, DropBox, iCloud, and others are about but are afraid to try them? How secure are they? Learn how to use cloud storage, the advantages and disadvantages of cloud storage, and how you might use these powerful tools in this class.

Coding

Curious about coding? This course will define what coding is and what it can do. It will also identify the basic types of programming languages and the importance of good algorithm design. Participants will be introduced to multiple coding environments including programming for Web-based and desktop applications.

Beginner Tai Chi

Learn Tai Chi. Studies have shown Tai Chi has many health benefits for seniors today, including increasing balance, gaining joint flexibility, muscle strength, and lowering blood pressure. In this class, you will learn the Tai Chi form bit-by-bit each week learning one or two new “moves.” You will begin to know enough to practice on your own. Learn in a safe, nonjudgmental space.

Candlemaking

Location: Highland Community College, Building F, room F-066, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

Create candles with six items. Basic candlemaking will teach you how to melt and pour wax, set up wicks and how to complete candles in containers and molds creating single or multi-layered colors. Students will learn about wax types, wicks, weights, scents, coloring, molds, and containers, and all other basic candlemaking knowledge.  You will also learn how to recycle wax and containers for reuse and will receive a detailed handout of all material covered in class and links for purchasing supplies. Students will take home the candle they make.

Women’s Self-Defense

Come and learn some mental and physical strategies for keeping you and your loved ones safe. Topics include, but not limited to self-defense targets 101, awareness/alertness, adduction vs. abduction, emergency responses, strangers vs. strange/uncomfortable people, and whole body movement.

Tempting Tapas

Tapas can be cold, hot, savory, or sweet. Entire restaurants exist serving tapas and have elevated tapas to a very sophisticated cuisine. Recipes will be from simple tapas to more complicated all sure to dazzle your guests at your next cocktail party. Please bring containers to take food home in.

Intro to Shield Metal Arc (Stick) Welding

Location: Highland Community College, Building T, room T-129, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

Commonly known as stick welding, learn how to set the voltage for the different size of electrodes, the proper angle to hold the electrode holder, the proper safety equipment, and what tools are needed. This is a hands-on class, please dress appropriately to work in a shop, including long sleeves, long pants, closed toe shoes, and no loose clothing.

Intro to Mig Welding

Location: Highland Community College, Building T, room T-129, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

Instructor: Mark Kloepping

Mig welding is one of the most common types of welding. Learn to set the wire speed, voltage, see five different weld joints, and four different weld positions. Learn the most common welds, how to maintain the wire feed gun, and safety equipment needed. This is a hands-on class, please dress appropriately to work in a shop, including long sleeves, long pants, closed toe shoes, and no loose clothing.

Pennsylvania Amish Lands Excursion for Individual and Couple

Location: Highland Community College Parking Lot B, Highland Community College, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

Join us on a trip to Lancaster PA to experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Amish Countryside on this 5 day, 4-night adventure. This trip is planned and offered by Adventure Safari Network, in conjunction with Highland Community College Lifelong Learning. Highlights of the trip include: visit University of Notre Dame, dinner at Lancaster County’s largest smorgasbord “Shady Maple”, guided tour of the Amish Countryside, live performance of the musical stage adventure “Jesus” at “Sight and Sound’s Millennium Theatre”, visits to country stores, a miniature horse farm, and Kitchen Kettle Village. Plus plenty of time for individual shopping and dining.
