Lifelong Learning September course details:

Metal Detecting

Location: Stephenson County Historical Museum, 1440 S. Carroll Avenue, Freeport, Ill.

Registration deadline: Sept. 9; Class: Sept. 16; 5:30 — 7:30 p.m.; Fee: $26

Instructor: Dale Anderson

This two-hour workshop is about learning about the functions of the detector, useful accessories, how to find the best hunting spots, and metal detecting etiquette. The instructor will demonstrate how to adjust the settings depending on the type of detecting to target the search. Please bring a detector to class, or one can be provided. In the event of inclement weather, the class will be held indoors.

Basic Digital Photography

Location: Highland Community College, Building H, Room H-127, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

Registration deadline: Sept. 9; Class: Sept. 17, 24, Oct. 1; 6 — 8:30 p.m.; Fee: $109

Instructor: Gary Gullett

This action-packed class will show how to use camera controls once and for all. In layman’s terms, it is about learning the elements of exposure control, white balance, and composition. Learn about photographing people, close-ups, action, and low-light photography. There will be a discussion about ways to share images and store photos. Bring a camera and gain the confidence to take great photos.

Woodworking and Laser Engraving

Location: Dakota High School Industrial Arts Room, 400 Campus Drive, Dakota, Ill.

Registration deadline: Sept. 12; Class: Sept. 19, 26, Oct. 3, 10 17, 24; 6 — 8 p.m.; Fee: $79

Instructor: Doug Visel

This is a hands-on course covering basic concepts of woodworking on state-of-the-art equipment at Dakota High School. This course is for beginner, intermediate and advanced woodworkers. This is a way to learn basic skills, how to work with a variety of machines (including engraver), and tools (both power and hand tools), and processes found in carpentry trades. Learn how to plan, and select and use materials, tools, and machines to produce a finished product. The final project is the construction and engraving of a Keepsake Box.

Stir Fry and Necessary Knife Skills

Location: St. Johns United Church of Christ, 1010 S. Park Blvd., Freeport, Ill.

Instructor: Michael Staver

Fast, tasty and nutritious, stir-frying can help liven up an evening meal. Practice culinary knife skills in this class while learning methods for turning bite-sized pieces of food into gourmet masterpieces. No recipes are repeated. Please bring containers to take food home in.

Pics on My Phone – Now What?

Location: Freeport Public Library, 100 E. Douglas St., Freeport, Ill.

Learn how to transfer images to the cellphone, computer or laptop, edit them, and share them on social media or through email.

Communication Between Generations

Location: Highland Community College, Building H, Room H-210, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

Instructor: Dieter Ammann

This class explores communication with family members, children and grandchildren. The topic is about getting in sync, to be able to get a point across and how to avoid discussion that can impact the level of communication. This is also an exploration of non-verbal cues and points of view to become a closer family.
