Highland Community College integrates oral history, music, and dance with a live performance of “It Takes Three to Tango” at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 in the Fine Arts Theatre in the Ferguson Fine Arts Center on the Highland campus, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.
The program takes the audience through the history of Argentine Tango, a cultural phenomenon. The different sections are linked by a theatrical presentation with musicians and dancers who become the characters that witness the evolution of Tango. The musicians’ participation varies from interpreting the music, accompanying the dance. The history of tango is linked to the history of the city of Buenos Aires and its social changes throughout time.
“The performance is a potpourri of Argentine Tango’s history,” said Cristina Szterensus, Spanish/English instructor. “The performance, from the Tango Duels, takes place on the streets Buenos Aires where men gather to create new dance figures, through the Milonga, from which the tango evolved, to its form in the brothels, to the complexity of Astor Piazzolla’s music, the tango continues to change and perpetuate the history of its country. It is the history of a popular dance that has conquered the whole world.”
