Highland Community College will host a Math Summit from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 21 in the Student/Conference Center in room H-201 located at 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.
The pilot program, in partnership with the Regional Office of Education, is for all district high schools. Principals, math teachers, and guidance counselors from area schools will show students where they are with math skills and what they need to prepare for college.
The summit is part of the Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness (PWR) Act to include provisions for evaluating students’ math proficiency during the junior year of high school. Students who demonstrate readiness can decide whether to take a math course during the high school senior year.
The summit, which is facilitated by Kathleen Almay, Illinois Director of Transitional Math at Northern Illinois University, is the first step in the co-development of transitional math courses within Highland Community College’s district. Each high school team will have time to work on their transitional math implementation plan.
The agenda includes:
- PWR Act Transitional Math overview and state-level updates
- Facilitated planning with your high school team
- Facilitated discussion between high school teams and Highland Community College
- Overview/discussion of items included in Memorandum of Understanding
- Debrief and discuss next steps
