African-American Genealogy

Participants learn about the variety of potential avenues to trace their African-American ancestors that go beyond the documents and family trees found on Ancestry.com. The use of DNA tests to determine which African nation, or nations, their ancestors came from will also be briefly addressed in the course.
Metal Detecting Tips for Beginners
Location: HCC/M-213

Are you curious about the increasingly popular hobby of metal detecting? Or do you already have a metal detector, but aren’t sure how to use it? This two-hour workshop will help you get digging for your first targets before you know it. You’ll learn about the functions of the detector, useful accessories, how to find the best hunting spots, and metal detecting etiquette. The instructor will demonstrate how to adjust the settings depending on the type of detecting you are doing and the target you are looking to find. If you have a metal detector, bring it to class. If you don’t, you’ll have a chance to swing one of the instructor’s detectors to locate and dig a target. The class will be held in the large, open grassy area straight west of the YMCA Child Care Center on Highland’s campus. In the event of inclement weather, the class will be held indoors.
Beginning Watercolor Workshop
Location: 1727 Church Street in Freeport

Each session consists of a short lecture, a demo, student exercises, creative time, and helpful critiques. Basics include subject selection, composition, color theory, and special watercolor techniques. Hopefully, each student will create at least one “masterpiece” during the workshop. Since studio time is limited, I encourage you to work at home and bring your paintings to class for review and critique. Class maximum of 10 students to allow individual attention. Printed handouts are provided each session to allow for catch-ups for missed sessions and to provide reference material for future use. A materials list will be supplied by the instructor.
Pics on My Phone — Now What?

Northern European Cuisine

Northern European will include countries such as Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom (UN’s definition of Northern Europe). This area, because of the severe winters, is known for its hearty cuisine, using lots of potatoes and fish. Dishes prepared may include poached salmon with dill sauce, German potato salad, Swedish meatballs, apple desserts, and lentil dishes. Please bring containers to take food home in.
Death in the White House

This class takes a closer look at the deaths and near deaths of the Presidents that have occurred while they were in office. It covers the four natural deaths of Harrison, Taylor, Harding, and FDR. It also covers the four assassinations of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy. It also takes a look at the near death of Wilson and near assassination of Reagan.
Introduction to Beekeeping

Allen Reed has been a backyard beekeeper for nine years. Join him as he shares some of the pitfalls and joys of this ancient yet modern craft-art-science-hobby-business. In class, he will discuss the history of beekeeping, the life cycle of the honeybee, and management of hives throughout the year. He will also discuss modern equipment choices, honey extraction, sales, and of course, sample some of the sweet rewards of beekeeping. No equipment or experience needed.

3D Printing

This course will introduce students to Additive Manufacturing/3D printing including how 3D printing is being applied across a number of domains, including design, manufacturing, and retailing; special capabilities of 3D printing such as customization, self-assembly, and the ability to print complex objects; and, demonstration of how 3D printers are made and how they work.
