Trustees Name Dr. Jamal Scott Next Highland Community College President

[Freeport, IL] — After an extensive nationwide search that attracted a diverse and highly qualified pool of candidates, the Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Jamal Scott as the College’s tenth president, effective June 15, 2026. A respected leader in higher education with more than 25 years of experience, Scott is recognized for his collaborative approach, strategic vision, and a strong commitment to academic excellence and student achievement.

Scott currently serves as Vice President of Undergraduate Education and Dean of the Undergraduate College at National Louis University. Previously, Scott held the position of Vice President for Strategy and Community Development at Waubonsee Community College. He is an Aspen Presidential Fellow through the Aspen Institute and has been a Peer Reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) since 2014.

As Highland’s president, Scott will focus on advancing the College’s strategic priorities, strengthening partnerships with local and regional organizations, and enhancing opportunities for students.

Dr. Jamal Scott earned a Doctor of Education in organizational leadership from Illinois School of Professional Psychology, a Master of Public Administration from Illinois Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor of Science in communication from University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. He also completed an Executive Certificate in Marketing Strategy from Cornell University Johnson Graduate School of Management.

Scott will succeed Chris Kuberski, who is retiring at the end of June after over 42 years serving in the Illinois higher education system.
