Highland Community College Lifelong Learning April and May classes include Resin Journal, Sketch Crawl – The Art of Locations Sketching, Basic Birding, Disc Golf and Civilian Conservation Corps. Resin Journal

Location: Highland Community College, Dorothy and RC Clock Technology Center (Building T), room T-122, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

Registration Deadline: April 10

Class: April 17, 18; 6-8 p.m.

Fee: $29

Instructor: Cindy Bielefeldt

Learn how to create a beautiful, one-of-a-kind journal cover using resin. Students will learn to pour resin into a mold and add such inclusions as mica powder, foil flakes, glitter, charms and more. After the resin has cured, students will return the following day to cut paper and a back cover and add rings to bind the journal together. This is perfect for gift-giving.

Sketch Crawl – The Art of Locations Sketching

Location: Elizabeth Business Hub, 131 North Main St., Elizabeth, Ill.

Class: April 24; 5-7 p.m.

Join a local sketch crawl class and embark on a creative adventure through the heart of the community. This class is designed to inspire artists of all levels, from beginners to experienced sketchers, to explore the community in a new way. Attendees learn various sketching techniques and discover how to capture the essence of urban life, natural beauty and architecture in a sketchbook. Bring a passion for art to life, one sketch at a time, to explore and sketch a way through the captivating scenes of Elizabeth. A sketchbook and pens will be provided for each student and can be taken home at the end of class.

Basic Birding

Location: Oakdale Nature Preserve, Mogle Building, 4433 S. Cranes Grove Rd., Freeport, Ill.

Registration Deadline: April 20

Class: April 27; 9 a.m. – Noon

Fee: $15

Instructor: Juliet Moderow

Learn about common birds that reside in or migrate through northwest Illinois through photographs and bird specimens. Handouts will be provided, but attendees should bring their field guide if they have one. An accessible 1/3-mile paved trail will be used to find and identify birds that might be present. Bring binoculars if attendees have them or these will provided to borrow during the class. Class will be held rain or shine.

Disc Golf

Location: Generations Brewing Company, 1400 S. Adams Ave., Freeport, Ill.

Registration Deadline: April 21

Class: April 28

Fee: $39; 1-4 p.m.

Instructor: Steven Winter

Disc Golf is played much like golf, except instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc. In this course, attendees will learn everything needed to know to get started, including rules and terminology, what discs to use when, and how to throw discs far and accurately. All equipment is provided, or feel free to bring some.

Civilian Conservation Corps

Location: White Pines Lodge, 6712 W. Pines Rd. Mt. Morris, Ill.

Registration Deadline: May 1

Class: May 8; 1-2:30 p.m.

Fee: $19

Instructor: Mark Peterson

Learn more about the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the most popular New Deal program, which led to greater public awareness and appreciation of the outdoors and the nation’s natural resources. Enrollees of the CCC planted nearly 3 billion trees, and constructed trails and lodges (including the lodge at White Pines), in more than 800 parks nationwide. An optional guided tour of cabins after class is included.
