Highland Choirs Bring the Music of Hollywood and Broadway to the Stage

FREEPORT — The Highland Chorale, Chamber Singers, Highland Youth Choir and Royal Scots will perform an afternoon of movie music and showtunes in their concert “From Stage and Screen” Sunday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. in Highland Community College’s Ferguson Fine Arts Center, 2998. W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

“It is so wonderful to be able to acquaint this new generation of musicians to their American musical heritage,” said Vocal Music Instructor Randy Haldeman.

The Royal Scots and Chamber Singers will perform selections from musicals and films, including “Working: The Musical,” “Rent,” “Babes in Arms” and more.

The Chorale will sing songs by George Gershwin and Cole Porter backed by a nine-piece jazz band.

The Youth Choir will perform music from “The Peanuts Movie,” Disney’s “Coco” and “Brave,” Pixar’s “Monster’s Inc.” and more.

“It’s great to be able to sing music that is so well-known and loved by so many generations,” said Hannah Deal, theatre tech major and Chamber Singers member. Music production major and Royal Scots member Ethan Shippy agrees: “I love to sing pieces of music that I’ve heard before, but also have a new, interesting twist to them.”
