Summerset Theatre’s 45th season brings ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to the stage

Highland Community College’s 45th season of Summerset Theatre will present “The Wizard of Oz” with performances on June 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, and 30 at 7:30 p.m., and at 2 p.m. on July 1, on the Fine Arts Theatre stage located in the Ferguson Fine Arts Center, 2998 W. Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill.

“The Wizard of Oz” is one of the world’s favorite musical films and it makes the transition to the stage with a faithful adaptation that stays true to the film. There are still evil monkeys that fly around the witch’s castle and the guards to intimidate. It is still the classic story that takes the audience down the yellow brick road with Dorothy and her new-found friends.

“The Wizard of Oz stays in the hearts of so many of us,” said Laura Early, director and Theatre Arts Instructor. “We all can relate to Dorothy’s pursuit to find a sense of belonging, and her need to see and do more. We also appreciate her realization that love, beauty, and home are right there in front of us if we just choose to look. This family-friendly musical provides performance opportunities for actors of all ages. It delights audiences.”

Summerset Theatre is made up of a cast of Highland students and members of the surrounding community.

Auditions are on March 17 at 10 a.m. in the Ferguson Fine Arts Center. The director is seeking talented singers, dancers, and musicians. There are roles for men, women, and youth (ages 5 and older). The musical also includes numerous adult roles of various ages. Highland students and community members are sought. Highland Community College Theatre Department actively seeks a multi-cultural cast.
